Regarding Steampunk

Postby othercourt » Tue Mar 19, 2013 11:55 am

This is a rather decent essay regarding Steampunk as a whole, and spends most of its time defending it as an artistic and literary movement. A good place to start if someone is just starting to explore the genre.

I'd add that another important aspect (essentially the "punk" part) is that the technology presented is done so in a way that is empowering to the common person, in contrast to other technologies that take away power and control. I think the common appeal of Steampunk is that not only is its form of empowerment understandable (as the author suggests), but that it expands the capabilities of the user in almost every way.
